Hyperpigmentation is when patches of skin become darker than the surrounding areas. This is caused by melanin, the brown pigment that in the skin. It can affect people of any race or colour.
Causes
It can be caused by skin diseases, injury to the skin or surgery. Changes in skin colour can result from outside causes. For example, skin diseases such as acne may leave dark spots after the condition clears. Other causes of dark spots are injuries to the skin, including some surgeries. Freckles are a form of hyperpigmentation and are often inherited (in the genes) and can become darker when exposed to the sun, as can ‘age spots’
The main purpose of melanin is to protect the body from damage by the suns harmful rays and it absorbs these to protect the skin, and is the reason why a person who bathes in the sun obtains a ‘suntan’
It is unable to provide complete protection and so exposure to the sun damages the skin, a person who is exposed to the suns rays for any length of time should use a sunblock
Over exposure to the sun (photo damage) is a main cause of brown spots and hyperpigmentation, caused by the cells producing melanine in uneven quantities.
