  • How does PicoSure tattoo removal work?

Usually in laser tattoo removal, the laser relies on a type of photodynamic energy (usually heat) to target both the pigment in the tattoo and the surrounding skin. While it’s effective in removing tattoos, treatments have to be widely spaced – anywhere from six weeks to two months apart – and it can take anywhere from 10 to 20 treatments before the tattoo is completely gone. PicoSure laser tattoo removal technology does not use any heat at all, instead delivering energy using an ultra-short laser pulse, creating a more mechanical effect that breaks the ink into microscopic fragments while leaving the surrounding skin completely untouched.

This means that PicoSure is a much more precise tattoo removal tool than traditional Q-switch lasers, requiring fewer treatments (in some cases just 3-7) and treatments can be repeated faster as the recovery time is reduced by not reaching the surrounding skin.

In many cases, a tattoo made up entirely of black ink can be removed in as little as 4-8 treatments and even recalcitrant tattoos such as large amounts of blue or green can be removed easily. PicoSure is proven to remove tattoos that other lasers could not.

  • How many treatments will I need?

That’s a difficult question to answer as the number of treatments you’ll need depends on a number of factors – how deep under your skin the ink goes, what colours your tattoo is made up of, the age of your tattoo and your skin type. We’ll be able to give you an estimate at your consultation.

  • How long will I wait between treatments?

With PicoSure tattoo removal you can leave a shorter space of time than other treatments, but you will need to leave sufficient time for your immune system to remove the broken ink particles. We’ll let you know the right time frame at your first appointment.

  • Is Picosure laser tattoo removal suitable for me?

PicoSure is suitable for those with skin types I-IV- is suitable for black or Afro Caribbean skin. It also cannot be used for cosmetic tattoos such as eyeliner or eyebrows.

  • Will it hurt?

Some people describe it as like being twanged with an elastic band, but it varies from client to client as everyone has a different pain threshold. If you’re worried, just ask; we’ll tell you how to minimise any discomfort both before and after your treatment.

  • What are the side effects?

You shouldn’t have any side effects, but if you have a history of poor wound healing or scarring talk to your practitioner at your initial consultation. There is a low risk of developing scars. After your treatment the skin may look red or itch, but this is completely normal and temporary.
