How to get rid of Ingrown hairs

At any given time you can go about your day, walking past countless strangers and never realise how many people surrounding you may have ingrown hairs. For some, it’s an image concern, for others it’s something that has developed into an infection which could then impact your health and confidence.

Through public research, it has been found that over 7000 people search for ingrown hair removal treatments, and at Pulse Light Clinic in London, we can confidently confirm that over 80% of our clients have some form of ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs are caused by hairs that have curled round and grown back into the skin. They can produce raised red spots, which can sometimes become infected and turn into painful, pus-filled sores.

Jo Wells – Senior Practitioner at Pulse Light Clinic (Tottenham Court Road branch)

“In my time working at Pulse Light Clinic, I have had so many clients, both men, women and individuals that identify as non-binary or trans who have had mild to serious ingrown hairs on all areas. The most heavily affected areas are:

  • The beard on men
  • Facial hair on women particularly women with any hormonal imbalances such as PCOS,
  • Nipples
  • Chest
  • Navel
  • Back of thighs
  • Bikini line
  • Under arms

Most people I speak to on initial consultations had no idea previously how effective laser hair treatments can be to fully eradicate ingrown hairs. They have previously either shaved, plucked, epilated, threaded or waxed and have battled with worsening ingrown hairs over the years which can often lead to severe break-outs of the skin, strong pigmentation and a very stubbly feel to their skin.

All other forms of hair removal either aggressively pull the hairs from their roots or cut the hairs off on the skin surface level which often causes the hairs to grow back thicker or can heavily irritate the skin. It’s a huge turning point for so many individuals once they give laser hair treatments a go and start to see the benefits straight away after one session! The impact on people’s lives after permanently removing all ingrown hairs is significant for both comfort, confidence and a sense of freedom away from daily maintenance with other forms of hair removal”.

The idea of laser hair treatments is to permanently reduce the hair in the given area by doing a set of treatments every 4-6 weeks approximately. As the laser light turns into heat as it travels through the hair follicles and it hits the small blood vessels that actively feed the growing hairs, the root of each hair is killed. The client is then advised to wait approx. 2 weeks for those hairs to work their way out of the follicles and then fall out completely. The client would then be hair free for a few weeks before the new hair growth cycle would come through. This hair should come back softer and finer and growth should be much slower than normal. When a client has an issue such as ingrown hairs, with every treatment they do with a laser, those ingrown, inflamed hairs will shed entirely, therefore there is no new irritation caused to the skin whatsoever!

As time goes on with each new treatment, clients find that their ingrown hairs go completely and pigmentation begins to fade as the skin recovers. As the root of each hair pushes out with its hair, each new hair growth is finer and softer, hence clients finding the ingrown hairs are a thing of the past! For bigger problem areas such as the face and the bikini area, women’s and mens confidence in day-to-day life, on the beach, with their partners, and at work/social events is restored often through deciding to do a more permanent form of ingrown hair removal.
