EmSculpt Neo: How Building Muscle and Reducing Fat Together Works

Blog

Most body treatments do one thing. They reduce fat, or they tighten skin, or they build muscle. EmSculpt Neo is unusual in that it works on two of those at once, in the same session, using two different types of energy delivered through the same applicator.

That is either exactly what you need or beside the point, depending on what is actually causing the shape you want to change. This explains what the treatment does, who it suits, and where it does not help.

What does EmSculpt Neo actually do?

It combines two technologies. Radiofrequency heats the tissue, and high-intensity electromagnetic energy causes the muscle beneath to contract.

The radiofrequency raises the temperature of the fat layer to a point at which fat cells are damaged, and the body clears them over the following weeks in the same way it clears fat cells damaged by any other method. The electromagnetic component causes muscle contractions far stronger and far more frequent than anything achievable voluntarily. Muscle responds to that the way it responds to intense exercise, by adapting.

The heating also serves a second purpose. Warming muscle before working it is the same principle as a warm-up before training, and here it happens in the first few minutes of the session.

Why combine the two?

Because most people wanting a flatter, firmer abdomen have both a layer of fat and underlying muscle that is less developed than it could be. Treating only one leaves the other unchanged, and the visible result is correspondingly partial.

What does a session feel like?

Unlike anything else, is the usual answer. The applicator is strapped to the area and you lie still. The warmth builds first and stays at a level described as a hot stone massage rather than uncomfortable.

The contractions are the strange part. The muscle tenses hard, involuntarily, in waves, and there is nothing you can do to influence it. It is not painful, but it is peculiar for the first session, and most people find it entirely tolerable by the second. Intensity is increased gradually and adjusted to what you can handle.

Afterwards the treated muscle often aches mildly, similar to the day after training. That settles within a day or two, and there is no downtime otherwise.

Which areas can be treated?

The abdomen and buttocks are the most requested. Applicators also exist for the arms, thighs and calves, where the aim is usually muscle definition rather than fat reduction.

What all of these have in common is a muscle group substantial enough to respond. The treatment works through muscle, so an area without much of it beneath the fat is not a good candidate.

Who is a good candidate?

Someone reasonably close to their target weight who wants better definition rather than substantial fat loss. That is the honest description, and it is narrower than the marketing around body contouring usually suggests.

The treatment reduces a proportion of the fat in the treated area and strengthens the muscle beneath it. Neither effect is large enough to substitute for significant weight loss, and someone with a considerable amount of fat over the area will not see much through it.

It suits people who already train and have hit a plateau, people who cannot train a particular area because of injury or time, and people who have lost weight and want to firm what is underneath. It does not suit anyone hoping to avoid exercise altogether, since the results are maintained by staying active.

When it is not appropriate

Metal implants, pacemakers and other electronic implanted devices rule it out, since the treatment uses electromagnetic energy. Pregnancy is an exclusion, and there are other medical circumstances that need discussing beforehand. This is checked at consultation rather than on the day.

How many sessions, and when do results show?

A course is delivered over a short period rather than spread out, since the muscle adaptation depends on repeated stimulation close together. Sessions are typically arranged over a few weeks, with the exact number agreed at consultation rather than sold as a fixed package.

Change is not immediate. Muscle adaptation and fat clearance both take time, so the difference builds over the weeks after the course finishes rather than appearing during it. Measurements and photographs at the start are worth taking, because the change is in firmness and shape rather than in weight, and the scales will not show it.

Do the results last?

The fat cells cleared do not return, but the muscle behaves like any other trained muscle: it needs continued use to stay where it is. Left completely alone, the muscle gains reduce over months in the same way they would after stopping training.

Most people maintain it with ordinary activity, and some return periodically for a maintenance session. Anyone describing the result as permanent is only telling you about the fat half of it.

Is it a replacement for exercise?

No, and it is worth being direct about that. It stimulates a specific muscle group in a specific area. It does nothing for cardiovascular fitness, nothing for the muscles it is not applied to, and nothing for the eating patterns that determine body composition more than anything else.

Where it earns its place is as something that does what training cannot easily do: an intensity of contraction in an isolated area that voluntary effort does not reach, combined with fat reduction in the same session.

Where it sits alongside other treatments

CoolSculpting reduces a defined pocket of fat and does nothing to muscle. Skin tightening treatments address laxity, which neither fat reduction nor muscle work resolves. Each addresses a different component of body shape, and they are frequently combined rather than chosen between.

Which combination is right depends on the balance of fat, muscle and skin quality in your particular case, and that is what the assessment establishes.

Getting assessed

The most common reason people are disappointed with body treatments is that the treatment addressed something other than what was causing the shape. Someone convinced they need fat reduction may need muscle work, or skin tightening, or a combination.
