How is PicoSure tattoo removal different from other methods?
In traditional laser tattoo removal methods, photo-dynamic energy (mainly heat) is used to target the pigment of the tattoo and break it up into small enough particles to be absorbed by the body. While this does work and will successfully remove your tattoo, treatments needed to be spaced widely apart and it can take anywhere from 10-20 sessions to completely remove the ink.
By contrast, PicoSure tattoo removal technology delivers energy using super-short pulses that have a more mechanical effect on the ink particles, breaking them into much smaller pieces much faster than the Q-switch laser. This method also leaves the surrounding skin and tissues untouched, minimising the risk of skin damage or side effects.
PicoSure is also much more precise than the Q-switch laser, and so requires fewer treatments – in some cases just 3-5, and treatments can be spaced much more closely as it does not reach the surrounding skin.
Black inks can be removed in as little as 3-4 treatments, and PicoSure even works better on traditionally recalcitrant blue and green inks than other removal methods. You can even remove a tattoo that Q-switches have failed to budge.
PicoSure is also a relatively comfortable procedure; while everyone has a different tolerance for pain and some discomfort is to be expected, most people describe it as no more than the sensation of having an elastic band pinged against the skin. If you’re worried you can ask for a cooling gel to be applied post-treatment.
Side effects are also minimal, but ask at your consultation if you have a history of scarring or poor wound healing. Immediately after treatment you may feel a little sunburned, but this will fade very quickly.
