While they’re more often a problem for ladies, both men and women suffer from stretch marks and they can have a serious effect on someone’s self-esteem. Stretch marks are not only experienced by pregnant women, they can appear anywhere on your body if the skin has been stretched, usually from such things as rapid weight or muscle gain and puberty.
What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are red, white or silvery lines on the skin. They are indicators that the skin stretched too fast and connective tissue in the dermis (middle layer of skin) tore. Both men and women get stretch marks and they are most common on the belly, bum, thighs, hips and breasts.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched too far too fast. With rapid growth, such as puberty or pregnancy the connective tissue in the dermis is stretched beyond its elastic ability. This sudden stretching causes the dermis to tear, through the tear the hypodermis (deepest layer of skin) becomes visible. This tear of the dermis and visibility of the hypodermis is what is known as a stretch mark.
When the body grows slowly the strong connective tissues of the dermis have time to stretch and so no tears occur. Initially stretch marks are red or purple due to blood vessels showing through the tear of the dermis. Stretch marks start to fade to a silvery or white appearance as these blood vessels contract and the pale fat beneath becomes visible.
Common causes for stretch marks:
- Adolescent growth spurts
- Rapid weight gain or weight loss
How We Can Help:
Laser stretch mark removal is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that can improve the appearance of your skin in just a few easy treatments. In just a short amount of time redness or silvery whiteness can be reduced, stretch marks smoothed out, and your skin will look healthier once again.
The beam of laser light acts to break down the scar tissue caused when your skin stretched, whilst simultaneously stimulating your cells to produce new collagen. Together this smooths the appearance of the skin and reduces discolouration. As you have each treatment the stretch marks will gradually fade away as newer healthier skin replaces it.
We’re one of only a few clinics in the UK able to offer this innovative treatment, and we’re pleased to be able to provide our clients with incredible stretch mark removal in just a few treatments.
