How Does HAIRestart® Work?
HAIRestart® utilises the patented Fotona SMOOTH® laser modality, delivering mild, precisely engineered thermal pulses to the scalp tissue and hair follicles gently, safely, and efficiently. Operating at the optimal infrared Er:YAG wavelength (2.94 μm), it redefines the landscape of non-ablative treatments, gently and efficiently heating the scalp to stimulate the body’s healing and regeneration process without ablating the skin’s surface. This differs from laser hair removal, which utilises completely different laser machines, wavelengths, depths and energies to destroy hair.
The laser’s thermal pulsing activates cell signalling pathways that regulate the hair growth cycle. This activation produces growth cells that restore the hair follicle’s function and produce new extracellular matrix proteins that trigger regeneration. The process stimulates blood flow to the scalp and encourages hair follicles to move to the anagen (growing) phase for thicker and denser hair. Several clinical studies have proven significant improvement in hair growth, increased hair density, and stabilisation of hair loss, regardless of the Androgenetic Alopecia grade and without any side effects.
Fotona HAIRestrart laser therapy is the perfect solution to hair loss, particularly for those who do not want any downtime.
This laser treatment contributes to the following:
- An increase in hair shaft diameter and density
- Stimulation of active growth stage of hair cycle
- Prevention of further hair loss
The Hair Growth Cycle
Anagen Phase: The active growth stage of hair follicles is known as the anagen phase. Hair undergoes significant development during this period, which can extend for several years. However, the duration of the anagen phase tends to decrease with age, resulting in the emergence of thinner and shorter strands.
Telogen Phase: The telogen phase signifies a resting period for hair follicles. During this phase, hair ceases active growth and eventually sheds to pave the way for new hair. HAIRestart® stimulates follicles during the telogen phase, encouraging a transition to the anagen phase and fostering the emergence of new hair growth.
Hair Loss At a Glance
Shedding between 50 and 100 strands of hair a day is standard and unlikely to cause noticeable hair thinning on the scalp because new hair is consistently growing to replace these strands. If you shed more than 100 strands daily, you likely suffer from excessive hair loss.
Alopecia is a common condition affecting a large percentage of both men and women. It typically manifests as a gradual decrease in hair fullness and presence. There are various causes and types of alopecia, and it can be considerably distressing as hair loss is an evident condition. Causes include hereditary hair loss, ageing, extreme stress (physical stress such as pregnancy, illness, operations and emotional stress), and certain medications.
Whereas hair transplants are more suitable for those with hereditary hormonal imbalances – individuals with Androgenic Alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) – laser and PRP can be used to treat all types of alopecia.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with the shrinking of hair follicles and hair thinning, is a recognised cause of alopecia. HAIRestart combats the impact of DHT on hair follicles by warming the scalp tissue, encouraging the absorption of necessary nutrients and stimulating the production of proteins and hair regeneration.
The Norwood scale (or Hamilton-Norwood scale) is the leading classification system used to measure the extent of male pattern baldness.
Hair loss specialists use the Ludwig Scale to determine the severity of female pattern baldness, which helps tailor appropriate treatment plans.
Lasers Are Fast Becoming the Preferred Solution to Thinning
With no downtime compared with its counterparts, laser therapy for hair growth is a quick, easy treatment that fits your schedule. The combination of the gentle, non-ablative Fotona ErYAG in SMOOTH mode and platelet-rich plasma injected into the dermis have resulted in substantial regrowth of hair density. Many studies suggest the effectiveness of combining laser stimulation therapy with PRP for faster results, though isolated laser therapy also provides impressive, lasting results.
What Do PRP and HAIRestart Laser Provide?
- Improved microcirculation – improved blood flow to small vessels surrounding hair roots
- Neoangiogenesis – development of new blood vessels in the hair roots
- Improved nourishment – growth factors act on stem cells, stimulating new hair follicles
- No adverse side effects compared with transplants and medications
Laser Hair Growth Stimulation VS Hair Transplant
Generally, for ongoing hair thinning, laser hair restoration proves effective in preventing further loss and promoting regrowth. However, clients experiencing severe hair loss or those already bald may find a more transformative solution in procedures like a hair transplant.

Fotona Laser Hair Regrowth Treatment FAQs
Can you combine Fotona HAIRestart® with other treatments?
We may recommend combining laser treatment with PRP or Exosome therapy for optimal results. These treatments work synergistically to stimulate hair growth and improve the overall health of the scalp. However, it is important to note that every individual's treatment plan will be customised according to their specific needs and goals.
Who is an ideal candidate for Fotona HAIRestart®?
Though the Fotona Hair Regrowth Laser treatment is suitable for all stages of hair loss, it is most effective for candidates exhibiting mild to moderate hair loss and maintaining realistic expectations. These include clients experiencing early signs of hair loss or temporary hair loss — gradual balding, pattern hair loss, hair thinning, Androgenetic Alopecia — but have not lost so significant an amount of hair to warrant a hair transplant.
We use the Hamilton-Norwood scale to assess the severity of hair loss in male clients and the Ludwig scale for female clients.
What is the recovery process like?
The recovery process for Fotona HAIRestart® is minimal, and no downtime is required. Some clients may experience slight redness or mild swelling immediately after treatment, but this typically subsides within a few hours. You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure.
Is there any maintenance required?
We recommend a maintenance session every 6-12 months after the initial treatment plan is completed. This helps to maintain the results achieved and promote continued hair growth.
How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions needed will vary depending on the severity of hair loss and individual response to treatment. On average, we recommend 6-8 treatments for optimal results. However, this number may be adjusted according to each client's progress and desired outcome.
Are there any side effects?
There is no downtime after Fotona HAIRestart® treatment; most clients experience minimal discomfort. However, some may experience temporary redness or swelling in the treated area, which typically subsides within a few hours.
How long does each treatment session take?
The duration of each Fotona HAIRestart® treatment session can vary depending on the size of the area being treated. However, sessions typically take around 30 minutes to an hour. Our experts will discuss the estimated time frame with you during your consultation.
Is there any discomfort during the treatment?
Most clients report feeling little to no discomfort during the Fotona HAIRestart® treatment. Our advanced technology ensures the procedure is virtually painless, making it a comfortable and enjoyable experience for our clients.
When will results be noticeable?
