What is Live Acne?
Live acne is the visible signs of skin pores currently engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. It is most commonly seen on the face but can also be found on the neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne does not pose a threat to health but it can be embarrassing, uncomfortable, as well as cause permanent scarring.
Mild to moderate acne will show many of the following:
- Whiteheads – these are pimples that stay beneath the surface of the skin.
- Blackheads – these are pimples that rise to the surface of the skin and look black due to excess melanin.
- Papules – these are small pink bumps that are sometimes tender.
Moderate to severe acne will show many of the following:
- Pustules – these are pimples which are red at the bottom, with pus on top.
- Nodules – these are large, painful, solid pimples that lay deep within the skin.
- Cysts – these are deep, painful, pus-filled pimples.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is a skin condition caused by clogged pores. The holes in our skin, known as pores, connect to oil glands under the skin, these glands secret an oil called sebum. This oil reaches our skin through the follicle which also holds a hair. One of the jobs of the oil is to bring dead skin cells to the surface where they will be removed.
Often this process runs smoothly; when it does not we see pimples or full-blown acne. Follicles can clog up due to excessive production of sebum, dead skin cells or an ingrown hair. The bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes lives in the oil sebum, normally harmlessly; when trapped it begins to multiply, causing the immune system to react, attack and cause inflammation. This inflammation is what causes large red pustules, nodules and cysts.
There is not one specific reason for this cycle, but contributing factors are:
- Hormonal changes during the teenage years, pregnancy, or changes from birth control pills
- Certain medication
- Greasy makeup
- Heredity factors
How We Can Help:
We use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to treat live acne. Live acne’s main factors are an over active sebaceous gland and the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Live acne treatments work using IPL equipment. It emits a wide range of light waves which target and kill these bacteria and shrink the sebaceous gland. Without these bacteria, the body’s immune system calms down and so does the inflammation; the shrinking of the sebaceous gland causes less oil to be produced, without excessive oil being produced, pores are much less likely to clog up again.
This treatment is for active, current, or live acne. If you have suffered acne in the past and are looking for acne scar treatments, then take a look here. Following successful live acne treatment, if you have suffered from acne for a long time, you may also want to look at laser removal for acne scars.
This treatment is safe and effective without being invasive. It can be done simultaneous to, or following topical handlings.
Your Next Step:
The first thing you should do is book yourself in for a free consultation. There is no need do anything before your consultation, though arriving without any makeup on can be helpful.
During the consultation, you will show the affected areas to the technician who will be able to recommend the best course of treatments and answer any questions that you may have.
Following that you will have a free patch test. That is the use of the IPL equipment on a small affected area to see how your skin reacts to it.
Once you have shown no adverse reactions to the trial you can get booked in for a full course of treatments.
