• How is PicoSure Tattoo Removal different compared to traditional tattoo removal?

Conventional tattoo removal relies heavily on a type of photo-dynamic energy (mainly heat) to target the pigment of the tattoo and surrounding skin. While it can successfully remove a tattoo, treatments need to be spaced from six weeks up to two months apart, and it may take anything from 10-20 treatments to fully remove a tattoo.

The newer PicoSure tattoo removal technology delivers a different type of energy using an ultra-short laser pulse, that has a more mechanical effect that breaks the ink into microscopic fragments but leaves the surrounding tissue untouched.

The PicoSure Tattoo Removal system is much more of a precision tool than traditional tattoo removal. As compared to conventional tattoo removal, PicoSure requires fewer treatments (in some cases just 3-5), and because it does not reach the surrounding tissue, the spacing between treatments can be shorter.

PicoSure can remove black ink in as little as 3-4 treatments in many cases, and it works far better on dark greens and blues than any other tattoo removal technology, and in fact, PicoSure has been very successful at removing tattoos that conventional laser tattoo removal could not.

  • How many treatments will I need?

There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ in determining the number of treatments required, because skin types vary, ink density varies and the colours and depth of ink also vary. Your own immune system is involved in removing the tattoo and the immune response is also different from person to person. An estimated prediction of the number of treatments your individual tattoo will require can be estimated at your initial consultation.

  • What time frame can be expected between treatments?

While PicoSure tattoo removal treatment can be delivered more frequently, it is advised to leave sufficient time between treatments for your immune response to play it’s role in removing the broken particles.

Fading of the tattoo occurs between treatments and one should allow for this to be maximised before the next treatment session. You will be advised by your practitioner of the optimum time frame between treatments.

  • Is laser tattoo removal painful?

Pain threshold is an individual experience, but some discomfort is to be expected even by those with a high pain threshold. Clients often describe PicoSure tattoo removal therapy like ‘being pinged with an elastic band’, but this varies from client to client. Your Practitioner will advise on how to minimise any pain or discomfort. Cooling the skin down, post-treatment, by use of gels is frequently suggested.

  • Are there any side effects?

For the majority of people the side effects from PicoSure Tattoo Removal are short-lived, minimal and to be expected. However, if you have a history of easy scarring, poor wound healing, or suffer an immune problem you should discuss this at your initial consultation. There is a low risk for developing scars without these issues.

Other possible side effects include darkening of the skin due to inflammation, which is a normal temporary side effect. After treatment the area may itch, or feel like a minor sunburn that hurts if chafed, but this is often a short-lived side effect. Lightning of the skin due to the loss of melanin (a substance that gives the skin it’s colour) can also occur, but is more susceptible in those with darker skin tones.

  • What Happens during PicoSure Tattoo Removal?

During PicoSure treatment your tattoo may turn white, the area may swell a little and is likely to turn red for some time afterwards (a few hours). The area sometimes blisters but not in all cases. Following the after-care advise of your practitioner will help to minimise these effects.

  • PicoSure Tattoo Removal Post-Treatment Care

Just like when you originally had your tattoo, some after-care is needed to protect the treated area and assist good healing. The area must be protected with application of ointment and gauze for the first 24 hours, and protected between treatments from sun exposure to prevent changes in pigmentation.
