Polycystic* Ovary Syndrome is a medical condition whereby women’s hormones are out of balance and cysts (benign masses) begin to grow on the ovaries. Though it does not directly have any severe medical effects and it is sometimes overlooked because of this, there are long term health conditions which can be caused by PCOS such as, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.
Unfortunately the cause of PCOS is not fully understood. Doctors believe that hormonal imbalances and genetics play a part, it is noted that it often runs in families. Another contributing factor is potentially the overproduction of the hormone androgen. It is a male sex hormone that is always produced in a women’s body, but the overproduction of it could be linked to PCOS.
What is known is the symptoms for PCOS, all of these work to chip away at a woman’s identity, confidence and femininity. The most common symptoms for PCOS are:
- Irregular (or no) periods
- Reduced fertility
- Excessive hair growth
- Weight gain
- Thinning head hair
There is some stigma around talking about PCOS, as for many it is not known about or fully understood, on top of the fact that, periods, acne and excessive hair growth are not the most desired topics of conversation.
September is PCOS awareness month and as we at the clinic see on a day to day basis the isolating and confidence-diminishing effects that PCOS has on our clients, we wanted to help make this condition known about.
As a laser clinic we can help alleviate some of the symptoms with our laser hair removal and acne scar removal but one of the biggest things that we can all do is raise awareness, or funds if you can, to increase understanding of this condition and hopefully bring us one step closer to a cure.
*Polycystic is defined as ‘multiple cysts.’
