What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by excessive sweating that goes beyond the body’s normal regulatory needs. This condition can affect various parts of the body, including the hands, feet, underarms, and face. People with hyperhidrosis often sweat excessively, even when the temperature is cool, or they are at rest, leading to significant discomfort and social anxiety.
What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
The exact cause of hyperhidrosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from overactive sweat glands. There are two main categories of hyperhidrosis:
- Primary (Idiopathic) Hyperhidrosis: This form of hyperhidrosis typically starts in childhood or adolescence and is not linked to any underlying medical condition. It is thought to be hereditary and often affects specific areas like the palms, soles, and underarms.
- Secondary Hyperhidrosis: This type is less common and is usually a symptom of an underlying health issue such as diabetes, menopause, thyroid problems, or certain medications. Secondary hyperhidrosis can cause sweating over larger areas of the body and may occur during sleep.
Types of Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis can manifest in different ways, primarily based on the areas of the body affected:
- Focal Hyperhidrosis: This type affects specific areas such as the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis), palms (palmar hyperhidrosis), soles of the feet (plantar hyperhidrosis), and face (facial hyperhidrosis).
- Generalised Hyperhidrosis: This is a less common form where excessive sweating occurs over large areas of the body and is often linked to underlying medical conditions.
