Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ's

How Long Will It Take to Remove My Tattoo?

The average time to remove a tattoo using the PicoSure or PicoWay lasers is about 4-8 treatments. Treatments are done with gaps of 8 weeks between appointments. However, this does vary for each client and their tattoo, as different factors such as ink type and colour, skin type, and age and location of the tattoo play a role.

At your laser tattoo consultation, your technician will be able to give you a better indication of how many treatments you personally need and answer any other questions you may have about laser tattoo removal.

What Happens During a Laser Tattoo Removal Treatment?

During a PicoSure/PicoWay treatment, the laser will be focused over the tattoo with some cool air blowing. The practitioner will take the laser over the tattoo a few times and you may see your tattoo turn white or red.

The tattoo will be wrapped in gauze and you will be given aftercare advice. The length of time of each treatment will vary depending on the size of the tattoo.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Painful?

Pain threshold is an individual experience, but some discomfort is to be expected even by those with a high pain threshold.

Clients often describe PicoSure/ PicoWay tattoo removal treatments like ‘being pinged with an elastic band’, but this varies from client to client. Your practitioner will advise you on how to minimise any pain or discomfort.

Cooling the skin post-treatment, using gels is frequently suggested.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Suitable for all Skin Types?

The PicoSure laser is only suitable for those with skin types I - IV.

The PicoWay laser is more suitable for darker skin and is safe to be used on skin types I - VI.

What is Needed for Laser Tattoo Removal Post-Treatment Care?

The area must be protected with an application of ointment and gauze for the first 24 hours, and then protected from sun exposure to prevent changes in pigmentation between treatments.

Laser Tattoo Removal London

Tattoo removal is defined as any method of removing a tattoo from the skin. There is a wide range of tattoo removal methods out there including dermabrasion (scrubbing off layers of the skin), TCA (which is an acid which removes layers of skin), excision (cutting the tattoo out) and of course laser (using energy to break down the ink particles.

Laser tattoo removal works by firing laser light into the tattoo which breaks the ink into tiny pieces, these little pieces are easy for the body to absorb. This allows the ink to be removed from the body itself. Laser tattoo removal avoids damaging the skin while removing the tattoo, unlike other tattoo removal methods.

Traditional lasers have been around for a while but the newer PicoSure & PicoWay lasers are a breakthrough in laser tattoo removal.

Some of the benefits of Picosure & PicoWay laser tattoo removal:

  • Less painful treatments
  • Effective on all colours of the tattoo, even greens, and blues
  • Fewer treatments required; the whole tattoo can be removed in as little as 4 treatments.

Conventional tattoo removal relies heavily on a type of photo-thermal energy to target the pigment of the tattoo and surrounding skin. While it can successfully remove a tattoo, treatments need to be spaced from six weeks to two months apart, and it may take anything from 10-20 treatments to fully remove a tattoo. On top of this, it was not always effective on certain inks such as greens and blues.

The newer PicoSure/PicoWay tattoo removal lasers use photo-mechanical principles as opposed to photo-thermal alone, combined with ultra-short pulses, called pico-seconds (one trillionth of a second) to shatter the ink into minute particles which your body then eliminates itself. This powerful process means the whole tattoo can be erased in as little as 3-8 treatments. Requiring less heat and less energy means that the surrounding tissue is left unharmed and the space between treatment can be much shorter too. it is also effective on all colours, including those greens and blues!
