Are matching tattoos ever a good idea?
For some people, the idea of getting matching tattoos with a partner is like, the ultimate romantic gesture; for others, it’s firmly on the list of ‘things I will never do no matter how much I love someone or how much tequila I’ve drunk’. So is it ever a good idea?
Like any Big Decision, figuring out whether or not to get a matching tattoo with your boyfriend/girlfriend/lifelong friend/that guy you just met last week means taking a lot of things into account. First up is the design you’re planning on getting; let it be noted that, in our personal opinion, getting someone’s name is never a good plan. Ever. We’d go so far as to say you may as well just break up. Same goes for anything involving hearts and/or flowers. Yikes.
If you’re serious about getting a matching tat, think a little outside the box; choose a symbol that means something to both of you, or something related to a place that you both love, or just anything that doesn’t immediately scream ‘I’M A PUZZLE PIECE AND THE OTHER HALF IS ON MY BOYFRIEND BECAUSE I JUST LOVE HIM SO MUCH’. Subtlety is key, folks. Anyway – isn’t it all just a bit more special if you’re the only two people in the world who can look at that tattoo and immediately know what it means?
Of course, you also need to consider what will happen to your ink if the relationship you’re commemorating falls apart in spectacular, heart-wrenching, ball-of-flames style. Is the tat subtle enough that you’ll still be able to live with it? Or would you rather slice it right off your arm rather than ever see it again? We’re not being cynical or anything here but hey, relationships and friendships end. You gotta think about these things.
Oh, and one final word of advice – if you do the whole ‘matching tats’ thing while drunk, you probably deserve to regret it. Sorry.
