It can take between 6 – 10 sessions of laser treatment to fully remove a tattoo.
The number of sessions to fully remove a tattoo will vary from person to person as various factors impact laser tattoo removal. These factors include:
- The size of your tattoo.
- The age of your tattoo.
- The location of the tattoo on your body.
- Your skin tone.
- The depth of the tattoo ink in your skin.
- The type, quality, and colour/s of ink used.

Laser Tattoo Removal Process
We have briefly outlined the process of removing a tattoo with a laser so that you know what to expect when you book your laser tattoo removal sessions.
Laser Light
Laser tattoo removal devices emit a concentrated laser of light. The light is emitted at a specific wavelength that is then absorbed by the tattoo ink in the skin. The laser beam is focused and precise, allowing for accurate targeting of the tattoo ink without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Break Down Ink
When the laser light is directed at the tattoo, the energy from the laser is absorbed by the ink particles. The energy causes the ink particles to heat up and break into smaller fragments. These small ink fragments can then be removed by your body’s immune system.
Not all inks break down in the same way. Pastel colours, as well as blue, green, yellow, and white inks, absorb different wavelengths of light. This means that different lasers will be used to effectively target and break down these ink colours in the tattoo.
Repeat
This process is repeated during each laser tattoo removal session. Multiple laser tattoo sessions may be required to ensure the tattoo ink is completely removed.
Benefits of PicoSure & PicoWay Laser Tattoo Removal
At Pulse Light Clinic, we use PicoSure and PicoWay lasers, the latest picosecond lasers in tattoo removal technology. We have highlighted the benefits of these lasers to showcase why we use them for your laser tattoo removal.
Low Pain
PicoSure and PicoWay lasers are generally well-tolerated by the skin, ensuring a less painful tattoo removal experience. Clients describe the experience as ‘like being pinged with an elastic band’, but this will vary from person to person.
In your consultation, we will perform a patch test to determine your pain threshold. If you find the experience uncomfortable, you can apply a numbing cream to the area at least 30 minutes before your arrival to reduce the pain.
Minimal Downtime
Traditional laser tattoo removal will require an average of 12 weeks between each session to allow for adequate healing and for the body to remove the ink particles.
With PicoSure and PicoWay, only a minimum of 8 weeks is required in between sessions to allow for healing and ink removal. The shorter downtime means you can remove your unwanted tattoo faster.
Fast Recovery
PicoSure and PicoWay lasers combine photomechanical principles and ultra-short pulses of laser energy in picoseconds (or trillionths of a second). This process minimises damage to the surrounding skin tissue during tattoo removal treatments, allowing for faster recovery during the healing process.
Minimal Skin Damage
PicoSure and PicoWay lasers use ultra-short pulses of energy to selectively target the tattoo ink particles without significantly heating or damaging the surrounding skin tissue. The shorter duration of the laser pulses means that less heat is generated, minimising the risk of thermal damage to the skin.
While these lasers minimise skin damage, it is still possible to experience some side effects after the treatment, such as redness, swelling, and blistering. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve on their own within a few days to a few weeks.
Effective On All Colours
No matter the colour of your tattoo, the PicoSure and PicoWay lasers will effectively remove your tattoo.
The PicoSure laser emits a 755-nanometer wavelength of light, which is effective in targeting blue and green ink. PicoWay emits two different wavelengths of light – 532-nanometer and 1064-nanometer – which are effective in removing a broad range of colours, including green, blue, black, and red.
Few Treatments
Both PicoSure and PicoWay lasers are effective in removing tattoos more efficiently and with fewer treatments than traditional lasers. How many sessions to remove your tattoo will depend on various factors, such as the size, colour, and location of the tattoo.
